Blog post, Question #2
Junior says “it sucks to be poor, and it sucks to feel that you somehow deserve to be poor.” (Alexie,13) Because Junior feels like because of his race and his sick dog, it claims that he deserves to be poor. In this scene, Junior is talking about his mother and father's dream jobs and how he wants to blame them for his sick dog, Oscar. “Poverty doesn't give you strength or teach you lessons about perseverance. No, poverty only teaches you how to be poor (Alexie, 13). Junior thinks that being in poverty just teaches you more of what it’s like to be poor. Some other things that may affect his words are his race, because he feels that “you’re stupid and ugly because you are indian” (Alexie,13), and his sick dog because after they don’t have enough money to take him to the vet, Junior knows that this is what is teaching him more about poverty. He knows that this is what it’s like to be poor. After this happens, Junior knows what they have to do in order to help his dog and this makes Junior feel worse about being poor.
Great insight and use of quotes. You did a great job describing how Junior feels about all the bad things that happen to poor people. I think there are more circumstances in the pages we read that you could use to back up his "deserving to be poor" attitude though.
